Response 7

After reading to about chapter 25 make a prediction on who you think is behind the murders of the apothecaries. DON’T ANSWER THIS AFTER YOU FINISH! It’s a prediction and can’t be a spoiler.

  1. My prediction on who killed the apothecaries is that it was Nathaniel Stubb and some apprentices. The only thing is I have no clue who their masters are because Stubb’s apprentices are Edgar Raleigh and Adam Horwath. I believe that the apprentices did it because the boy who was in Master Benedict’s work shop was also in the front room the day of the murder in a blue apron. On page 159 it says, “‘What you told me to do,’ Wat said, sounding annoyed. ‘Looking for the bloody fire.’ Stubb cracked Wat on his ear. ‘Do you understand what this is worth?’ His eyes bulged. ‘Is that saffron? You idiot!'...'Have you even found the anything?’ Stubb said, ‘Or are you just destroying this shop for the sake of it.’ Wat ground his teeth. ‘It isn’t here.’ ‘It has to be here. If you hadn’t killed Benedict so quickly, he would have told you where it was.’” So the apprentice obviously did it.

After reading chapter 25 in the book, The Blackthorn Key, I predict that Nathaniel Stubb, Elephant, Martin, and Wat are to blame for the murders around London. I believe that Stubb directs Elephant, Martin, and Wat to do all of his dirty work, such as killing the apothecaries. I think that all of these people are also a part of the Cult of the Archangels. This Cult is known for doing horrible things, which is what Stubb and his minions have been doing. Stubb has never been fond of Master Benedict, and I believe that Master Benedict has something Stubb wants so, he killed him. If Stubb gets hold of what he wants, he could follow his plan and take over London, or even more.

  3. After reading chapter 25 I think that Nathaniel Stub, Wat, Elephant, and Martin are to blame for the murders around London. I think this because, Stubb is a Master and Wat, Elephant and Martin are the people who go around killing the Apothecaries in London. On page 230 it states,” That's where I'd seen the Elephant before... They'd been in the alley behind our shop, right before my master was murdered.” So Elephant and another were the ones who killed Master Benedict. Another reason that I think Elephant and everyone else is behind this is because Stubb is like their Master. In the book it states,” ‘ Our master told us to be sure,’ the Elephant said,’ So we make sure. Once the Halls cleared, bring Christopher to the basement. We’ll deal with him there.” I think that Stubb is the one Master that Elephant, Martin, and Wat serve.I think that Master Nathaniel Stubb is to blame for the murders of the Apothecaries in London.

    1. Haley, I LOVE that you name several killers and provide evidence for them. This is an excellent, thorough response.

  4. After reading to chapter 25 I think that Nathaniel Stubb is behind the work of the Archangels actions. Though he’s not killing anyone himself I think he’s working with the three apprentices Martin, Wat, and the elephant. I think that these four all had something to do with Master Benedict’s murder. I say this because they were all near Blackthorn the night it took place. Though Master Stubb didn’t kill Master Benedict himself I still think he is to blame for his death. On page 159 it says “It has to be here. If you hadn’t killed Benedict so quickly, he would have told you where it was” said Stubb. This shows us that Stubb didn’t kill Benedict but hired Wat to do his dirty work. Overall, I think that if one person was to be blamed for these murders it should be Nathaniel Stubb.

  5. After reading chapter 25 I believe that Nathaniel Stubb was behind the murders. But was it him who killed Master Benedict? My thoughts are that it was the three kids who are all apprentices to Master Stubb. In the chapter it said that Christopher saw all of them right outside his master's shop before the murder. If you put two and two together you get, Nathaniel Stubb who didn't seem to like Master Benedict and wanted to take his shop and then his apprentices who were sitting right outside the shop; and why would they be trying to kill Christopher if they didn't kill Master Benedict? That is why I think Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentices were behind the murder.

  6. My prediction on who's behind the killing of the apothecarys is Nathaniel Stubb along with some apprentice. Reading chapter 25 I can say    Stubb directed each apprentice (Martin, the elephant, and Wat) to do his biddings of killing the apothecarys around London. Doing this, I could also predict that all of them are part of the Cult of Archangel. I have compared the two and what they have been doing and is seems completely logical that they are a part of this cult. I think that Stubb is trying to get something from Master Benedict and some other apothecary are hiding. All in all, I think Nathaniel Stubb is one of the main people behind the killing of apothecarys in London.

    1. Stubb is the logical choice at this point, Connor. He's just such an unlikable guy, right?

  7. After reading chapter 25, I predict that Nathaniel Stubb, along with Martin, Wat, and the Elephant are behind the murders of the apothecaries in London. I also predict that these guys are apart of the Cult of Archangel. I think they are killing other apothecaries because they are looking for bloody fire, and that is something they don't have. On page 159, it says, " 'What I was told to do,' Wat said, sounding annoyed. 'Look for the bloody fire.' " Later on the same page it goes on to say, " 'It has to be here. If you hadn't killed Benedict so quickly, he would have told you where it was.' " This tells us that Stubb isn't killing the apothecaries himself, instead he hired Wat to do the job.

After reading Chapter 24 I can predict that Nathaniel Stubb was the mastermind behind the attacks on apothecaries. I think he was in charge of planning on who to kill and when to kill them. I think he was able to get the three apprentice Wat, Elephant and Martin involved to help him with the murders so no one would suspect he was behind it all. On page 158 it says “I knew that voice. I knew it well; I knew it before he stepped into view. It was Nathaniel Stubb” This is where I first thought Nathaniel Stubb was behind all the murders. After reading Chapter 24 is when I thought the three apprentice were involved.

I personally think that the murderer is Wat. My first reason behind this is on page 159 he and Stubb are talking in Master Benedict's shop. “It has to be here, if you hadn’t killed Benedict so fast he would have told you where it was.” The one reason I don’t think Stubb is the killer is that previous to that text it states “ Stubb scrambles to the end of the counter and tried to pluck the golden strands of saffron crocus from the vermilion it had mixed with. He didn’t see the look Wat gave him. Or the way the boy’s fingers of the broad, curved blade in his belt.” The reason I think Stubb isn’t the killer is that Wat thought probably for a second about killing him. From this I can gather that Stubb is most certainly expendable. Though Stubb is not the murderer I think he may play another role, possibly to hold weight in the apothecaries council. (even though pretty much everyone thinks he’s crazy.)

    1. Josh, your point about Stubb being expendable is excellent (and it's a great use of vocabulary!). I hadn't thought of it from that angle.

  10. After reading to Chapter 25 in this book I predict that Nathaniel Stubb is the one ordering the murders, but not the one committing them. I think that Wat was just doing as Stubb says. On page 159 it states “Wat ground his teeth, ‘It isn't here,’ ‘it has to be here. If you hadn't have killed Benedict so quickly, he would have told you where it was.” This to me is a clear indication that Stubb and Wat had something big to do with the murder. Stubb is the one who is ordering and seeking out the Apothecary's to kill while Wat is doing this dirty work. But, this is just my opinion, I might not be right but I believe it is Stubb and Wat.

  11. I think that Nathaniel Stubb is murdering the apothecaries. I don't think that Stubb kills the apothecaries himself. I think that Elephant, Wat, and Martin were told by Stubb to do the job so that Stubb was not blamed for killing them. Stubb is an obvious killer to me because of what was said in the book at one point. It said that if Stubb had killed Benedict slower he would have told Stubb where the saffron was. Nathaniel Stubb was in Benedict's shop ransacking it for ingredients. Then Stubb had Wat going to look for Christopher. I think Stubb wanted to kill christopher.

  12. After reading chapter 25, I predict that Nathaniel Stubb is behind the murders. But I don't think he kills the men himself. I believe that there is also someone else behind the murders, but I don't know for sure. Christopher saw Stubb in the workshop. I also believe that Stubb's apprentice killed Master Benedict. I think that something is going to happen to Stubb though.

  13. Jerek-
I think that Master Stubb is behind the murders throughout the book. I think this because Master Stubb and his assistant Wat had ransacked Master Benedict’s store and admitted to the murder of Master Benedict. I also believe that Master Stubb is behind the murders because his assistant trapped Christopher in a room so the Cult of the Archangel could interrogate and kill him. Since Christopher doesn’t know how many people are in the cult, it might be more than one person killing the apothecaries. I believe that Stubb is killing the apothecaries to find the ‘fire.’ I think this because on page 182 Master Oswyn says, “So that’s why the Cult is torturing its victims. These aren’t sacrifices, they’re interrogations.”

    1. Excellent evidence backing up your claim, Jerek! Stubb acts so guilty right from the start, and is just unlikable. It's easy to suspect him right away, isn't it?

  14. I think that Wat, Martin and, the Elephant are working with the Cult of the Archangel to kill the apothecaries. I think this because Wat was at the shop the day that Master Benedict was murdered and Martin and the Elephant were sitting outside the shop. They might have been spying on the shop to make sure it was empty when they killed him. A little while later in the book, Wat, Martin, and the Elephant were trying to kill Christopher because he is Master Benedict’s apprentice and he might have some suspicions about the Cult.

  15. After reading to about chapter 25, I think that the murderer of the apothecaries is Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentices. I think this because on pg.159, Nathaniel and his apprentice Wat were in the workshop the night after Benedict was murdered. Nathaniel had said,“If you hadn’t killed Benedict so quickly he would have told you where it was.” Also in chapter 23 Nathaniel, Wat, Martin, and the Elephant had locked Christopher in a room because they want something from him. I’m guessing that it’s the same thing that they wanted from Benedict. Therefore, I think that Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentices are behind the murders of the apothecaries.

  16. After reading through chapter 25, I came to the conclusion that Nathaniel Stubb and the apprentices who were trying to harm Christopher are working with the Cult to murder people, or more precisely, murder Apothecaries. I think this because on the night when Christopher and Tom broke into Master Benedict's shop to get Christopher's present, Nathaniel was talking to Wat. In the book, it says, "'I don't care what Benedict thought of his apprentice,' Stubb said. 'The boy might have seen something, heard something, read something. Find him and question him. Then get rid of him, same as the others, whether he knows about the fire or not. We can't risk keeping him alive.'" This quote from the text gives me reason to believe that Nathaniel is working with the Cult, and then later in the book, Wat and two other apprentices by the names of Martin, and according to Christopher, the Elephant, try to hurt or kill Chris. In chapter 23 it says, "'He said he was here to see Master Colthurst,' Martin said defensively. 'What was I supposed to do?' 'Hide him somewhere. No one's supposed to see him. What if the masters had gone up there?' 'Why would they do that?' 'Enough.' The Elephant's voice rumbled. 'It doesn't matter. The masters left. No one's going to find him now.' 'Let's finish this, then,' Wat said, and I swore I could hear his blade leaving its sheath. 'Not yet,' the Elephant said. 'The doorman's still here. Go get rid of him. No, not that way. Send him on some errand that will keep him away for a while. Martin and I will check the rest of the Hall, make sure no one else has come.' 'Just ask the doorman,' Martin said. 'He'll know.' 'Our master told us to be sure,' the Elephant said. 'So we make sure. Once the hall is cleared, bring Christopher to the basement. We'll deal with him there.' I heard the iron bench creak, the scuffing of leather on stone. 'It's not like he's got anywhere to run.'" This conversation proves that the apprentices are trying to harm Christopher, thinking that he probably has information they need, so they are going to bring him to the basement to possibly torture him, or just kill him there so the murder is easier to hide.

  17. After reading chapter 25 it was clear who the murders were. I think the murders are Nathaniel stubb and his apprentices. Why I think Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentices are the murders is because the night that benedict was murdered they were in the work shop talking. In the text it says "If you hadn't killed Benedict so quickly he would have told you where it was." I picked this piece of evidence because it is practically a confession.I also think that Nathaniel stubb and his apprentices are the murders because when they locked Christopher in the closet to kill him I knew it was Nathaniel stubb and his apprentices .That's why I think Nathaniel stubb and his apprentices are the murders.

After reading chapter 25 the murders are Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentices. I think this because the night that Benedict was killed. He says "if you hadn't killed him so quickly he would have told you were it was." This was a conversation that they had. the stuffed Christopher in a closet and tried to murder him.

  19. My prediction of who is killing the apothecaries is Nathanial Stub. Nathanial Stub has shown great interest in buying of his competition, which in this case was Master Benedict’s. Master Benedict refuses to sell it, and Stub accuses Benedict of stealing his recipe. With this known history, plus on page 40 Christopher states, “How far would a man like Stub go to get what he wanted?” shows that Stub want has much power has he could get. Plus, Stub later speaks of wanting a fire which he believes Master Benedict may have known of its location. Nathanial Stub has shown great need for wanting to be theta the top of his competition, and he seems to be man who doesn’t let anything stop him from reaching his goals. For these reasons, I do believe that it was Master Stub who was killing the apothecaries.

After reading chapter 25, I predict that Nathaniel Stubb is behind the murders. My reasoning for this is Stubb has shown lots of interest in buying Benedicts shop. He wants something that Benedict has. This is proven after Benedicts murder, when Stubb accuses Benedict of stealing his recipes. Another piece of evidence that stubb is behind the murders, is when Stubb sent his "Apprentice" to go steal "Fire" from Benedicts shop. The "Elephant" and "Long-Haired" guy are also part of Stubbs group as shown in chapter 25 when they trap Christopher.

After reading chapter 25 in the book, The Blackthorn Key, I predict that Nathaniel Stubb and Wat are to blame for the murders around London. I think Stubb is behind the murders of the apothecaries. I think it is Stubb because he has been acting mysterious. I believe Elephant and Stubb were planning something when they were playing cards. I think they were actually only pretending to play cards. I feel like they did this so that Christopher wouldn't catch on. I think that all of this is because Master Benedcit knows where the secret receipe is located.

  24. After reading to about chapter 25, I think that the murderer is Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentice(s). I think this because the author states on pg.159, that Stubb and his apprentice Wat were in Master Benedict's workshop. Stubb was in the workshop on the night after Benedict was murdered. While there Nathaniel said to Wat,“If you hadn’t killed Benedict so quickly he would have told you where it was.” Therefore proving that Nathaniel is behind the murder of Master Benedict.

I think this because Nathaniel Stub has show great interest in buying master Benedict shop. Wat is also to blame because Stub directs Wat to do all his dirty work, such as killing the apothecaries. but it not Way's fault because he had to listen to his master. But on theory of mine is that it was Stub's idea to kill off all of the apothecaries. And for my last reason that proves Nathanial was behind the murder of Master Benedict is stated on page 159 Nathanial said to Wat,“If you hadn’t killed Benedict so quickly he would have told you where it was.” and for those reasons and that very useful peace of evidence it shows that Nathanial and Wat were behind the murder of MAster Benedict.

I'm afraid I can't really answer this question. I've already read the book, and I don't think it's fair to pretend I don't know and just hint at what's going on. I know this wasn't what I was supposed to type, but I figured it'd be better to be honest. However, if there's people who haven't finished the book yet, I hope you enjoy what's left of it! The ending left me wanting to get the second book, so I hope everyone else feels that way too. Have fun!

  27. I think it is Stubb and his squad. I also feel like Martin is working with him. They seem very mysterious about where Christopher is. I feel like they know he has information about the murder and want him dead. I feel like Stubb is killing off the apothecaries so he is the best in the business. It makes sense to me if it is Stubb that is killing off the apothecaries.

  28. I think Nathaniel Stubb is the murder with the help of Wat. I think that Stubb is trying to decrease the number of stores so his could be the biggest Business. I think Wat is the one doing the killing like Stubb is paying him to do the dirty work so he won't get caught. Wat was acting suspicious on page159 by gritting his teeth when the murder was being talked about it was like he did something wrong to draw attention to himself. I think it was Stubb because it's obvious that he doesn't like the other store because they are competition.

  32. After reading chapter 25, I think that Nathaniel Stubb and Wat are behind the murders of apothecaries in London. On page 159 the book states that Stubb and his apprentice Wat were in Master Benedict's workshop. They were in Master Benedict's shop the night after Mater Benedict was murdered. I think that they wanted something from his shop but couldn't get it unless they knew that they were entirely clear from Master Benedict catching them. While at the shop that night, Nathaniel Stubb exclaimed to Wat,“If you hadn’t killed Benedict so quickly he would have told you where it was.” This makes Wat look very suspicious as to who could be the murderers of the apothecaries. In my overall prediction, I think that Stubb and Wat both have something to do with the murder of Master Benedict.

  33. I think that one of the people who are behind the apothecaries murders is Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentice(s). Stubb and his apprentice(s) have, since the beginning of the book, been mysterious. They never really seemed to be good guys or even neutral. It would make sense that Stubb is behind the murders because he is just killing his competition. Literally. I think that Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentice(s) are behind the apothecaries murders.

  34. After reading chapter 25, I think Nathaniel Stubb and his apprentice Wat are the ones behind the murders. Since the beginning of the book Nathaniel has always been super secretive. It seems like he always knows when the murders happen, and towards the beginning of the book Stubb says something along the lines of have you heard there's been another murder. Also, Stubb is one of the few apothecaries that hasn't been murdered. Over all, I think Stubb and his "apprentice" Wat are behind the London murders.
