  1. My overall opinion of this book is amazing it was adventurous, intriguing, there were some unexpected twists, it was a real page turner. On a 1-5 scale I would have to give this book a like a 10. I normally don’t like the summer reading book but I loved this one so much I couldn’t stop reading it. It is my favorite book next to the Land of Stories Series (nothing can beat that series). But it was an amazing book.

  2. My overall opinion of this summer book was that I loved it. I loved it because it was really exciting and you never knew it was going to happen. I love this book so much that it didn't even take me a month to read. On a scale of 1 to 5 I would rate this book 5 no problem. I would rate this book at five because it is so exciting and it is the best summer book that I've ever read. I loved everything about this book. This is my favorite book next to the Land Of Stories and the Twilight series. But overall I absolutely loved this book.

  3. My overall opinion of the book The Blackthorn Key is that it was an okay book.If I had to give it a rating I would give it a 3 ½ . I say this because I feel as if the book had a boring start to it and didn’t “hook” me. I feel this way because only at certain times was this book good. From time to time the book would be interesting and at others it would just bored me. On the other hand, I have to say I enjoyed the ending a lot. It was full of mystery and adventure. I like how Christopher got the shop Blackthorn. This is because I think he deserved it. Overall, this is what I’d rate the book The Blackthorn Key.

The Blackthorn Key was an mysterious and adventurous book. Giving this book a rate 1 through 5, I give it a 3. This book doesn’t quite fit in my category of books I like to read but it definitely wasn’t the worst book I’ve read. I liked how this book was full of adventures and twists, but I’m not a big fan of books that take place in the past. At first I was not excited at all to read this book, but it started growing on me every time I opened it up. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this book to people who don’t enjoy books that take place way back in the past.(sorry)

    1. Maiya, never be sorry for giving an honest, intelligent review of a book! Given the fact that you don't personally like books that are set in the past, it sounds like you were still able to look at some positive aspects of this book. Providing thoughtful feedback is so important in literature, so I'm thrilled that you did. And I'm glad you didn't totally dislike it. :)

  5. The Blackthorn Key was an awesome mysterious book. Being into these types of books I would definitely give it a 5 rate from 1 through 5. I enjoy all of the adventure and mystery solving. I can easily say this was my favorite summer reading yet. Like Gabby I'm reading the rest of the series. Funny thing is I read this the day after school was done and I finish the response a month later.

    1. So happy to hear you loved this book, Connor! Have you started the second one yet? Gabby loved that one, also. I haven't read it, but am going to. And procrastination (finishing book early, but blog not until recently) is a common practice over summer. LOL!

  6. My overall opinion of the book “The Blackthorn Key” was that it was okay, but not my favorite. I enjoyed that at some parts it was really exciting and you couldn't stop reading. I didn’t enjoy that in the beginning it didn’t hook me. On a rating of 1-5 I would give it a 3. My reasoning for this is that it moved too slow in the beginning, but at the end it was more suspenseful. It took a while to get into it, but once I was it was a lot easier to read.

    1. Lindy, I thought it was slower in the beginning also. I do really like the book, but agree with your observations. I'm glad you were eventually able to get into it.

  7. I think the book "The Blackthorn Key" was AMAZING. I absolutely loved it, and it was very thrilling. This book was right in line with the kind of books I enjoy reading, so I will most likely be reading the rest of the series. The only thing I didn't really like about the book was the fact that Tom's father was so cruel to his son. Like, OK, yeah, hit him every once in a while, but he's your son! He contains half of you! You would think to take it a little bit easier on him. But, I guess that is just a character's personality and their flaw. Other than that, I totally loved the book. 5/5, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

    1. Kaitlyn, for me it's always hard to hear or read about any sort of cruelty toward children. It's especially hard when the parent is being cruel. I'm so glad you loved the book!

  8. This book was very mysterious. If I could pick one thing good about this book it would be that it was a short book.If I could give this a star rating it would be a one. These are three reason why I didn't like the book. First why it was a one is it was a hard book to read. When I say its a hard book to read I mean its confusing. I think it was confusing because I had to re-read a lot and figure out a lot of weird words.Second it was kind of boring. It was boring because when I stated it I knew it was not the book for me.I gave it a chance but it just stayed the same.Third It was kind of like a little kids but with all the spells and cooking recipes like a witch. It was aslo like a kids book because it didn't hook me.The book didn't hook me and I almost didn't finish it but I had too.I would not read this book again.

  9. My overall opinion of the book The Blackthorn Key was it was a really good book. I loved how adventurous it was. I loved how there were many plot twists and it made you think a lot. I loved all the intricate details. It described everything so well. The only thing I did not like about it was how towards the end it got a little violent and bloody. It was a hard image for my brain to picture. Out of a 1-5 rating I would give this book a 4. I really liked it, but it wasn’t the best book I have ever read. I would definitely recommend this book to people in 6th grade and up. I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope to read the second one.

I liked the book because it kept you hooked on till the very end of the book. The first thing that kept me reading was when Master Benedict killed himself to save Christopher. I never expected him to sacrifice himself and leave the Archangel’s Fire. Another twist that really kept me reading was at the end when Master Oswyn revealed that he was the one that killed all of the apothecaries. I thought that Master Stubb was the villain of the story because he sent his apprentice to find Christopher and kill him. I also liked the book when Christopher opened the door behind the mural and found the recipe to the Archangels Fire because it is satisfying. On a 1 to ten rating I give it a 7 because it is not one of my favorite books. If the book used more of the recipes to solve the problems in the book it would have been a 9 out of a ten.

  11. I liked this book because it kept me hooked till the very end of the book. the first thing that got me hooked was when they started talking about codes. thought the book that a secret code that was put together. The second thing that made want to read more is when master Benedict kills himself to save Christopher. I was never expecting that he would kill himself. That is why i liked the book.

I think that this book was a good one and on a 1-5 star scale I would rate it 3.9. As I said this is a very good book full of mystery and codes but I have one major problem with that and it is Master Hugh and Master Stubb’s deaths. It’s not the fact that they died, it’s that they had no closure whatsoever. After they die Tom talks to Chris and pretty much says hey Master Stubb and Master Hugh are dead and then Chris is like Oh no that’s so… ooh look a squirrel. They get pretty much no mention other than in the context of Master Blackthorn throughout the rest of the book. Again, otherwise the book was good; there were some slow spots but they were soon replaced with funny moments or action parts.

  13. My overall opinion of the book is 4/5. I say this because was good but it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. It was very interesting, which makes me happy since I would have never thought to pick up this book. I typically enjoy a book with more lighter themes, and to me “The Blackthorn Key” a lot darker than my typical book. “The Blackthorn Key” did show me that a murder/mystery type of book can be just as interesting as my usual comedic books. I overall very much enjoyed this book, and would recommend this to someone who like a bit of a darker book.

  15. My overall opinion of the book is 4/5, although I really did like it there was some flaws about it. They just left out what happened to Wat. What if he found the recipe and ran? I personally feel like the author could of added more details about what happened to make the Apothecaries turn on each other. I was very surprised that I liked the book cause I normally don't like these types of books, but it was really good. I also wish the author would of added who Christopher's new master would be. I really liked the book but it did leave me with alone of questions.

  16. My overall opinion of this book was was that it was okay. It was not one of my favorites and so i'd give it maybe a 3 out of 5. My reasoning behind this is because I personally don't like these styles of books the era and the plot were not my favorites. However I did like how the author used codes and added a little bit of mystery to the story. I also enjoyed the characters. I found there personalities very relatable and fun. Although it was not one of my favorites the book was pretty enjoyable to read.

I did not find any parts of the book that I did not enjoy. This book was definetly something that I would recommend to others looking for a good read. I would give the book 4 stars. 19. My overall opinion of the book, "The Blackthorn Key," is that it was a good book, but not my favorite. When I first started the book, it was slow, and didn't hook me. It took me a few chapters to really get into it. If I rated this book on a scale from 1-5, I would rate it a 4. I would rate it a 4 because some parts bored me, but others were like I can't put the book down because I have to find out what happens next. Overall, the book was interesting, mysterious, and adventurous even though it is not the best book I have ever read.

My overall opinion of the book, "The Blackthorn Key", is that it is a great book. If I had to choose a rating between 1 and 5, I would choose a 3. "The Blackthorn Key" was a good book and there were a lot of parts that hooked you, but it wasn't the best book I've read by far. The book was adventurous and had a lot of mysteries which defiantly helped it. That saying if it didn't have as many mysteries the book wouldn't be that good and I would mark it as a 2. If I could change one thing about the book I would take out some of the parts that were slower and didn't want to make you want to read as much.

  22. In my opinion the book was okay. If I were to rate it I would give it a 3 3/4 . I say this because I feel like the book started off great. But it started getting boring and I had to force myself to read it. Then by about chapter 20 it started to get better and it hooked me again. I love good mystery books, and in the end it turned out to be okay.

I think that the book The Blackthorn key is a great, well written mystery book. I loved reading it and thought it was a very funny at times. I also liked that Christopher who is just a boy was able to solve so many codes and figure out the murder. Honestly there was nothing that I really didn’t like about the book. I really enjoyed reading this book. It wasn't very cliche at all, and had a really cool plot. Towards the end, the ending was done well and easy to follow, and it left me wanting to read more. However, I do kinda wish Tom had played a bigger part in the story. He was a big part of Christopher's life, as he was his best friend. However, to me, it seemed almost like he was only there when it was convenient. That is just a small nitpick though, so I'm letting it slide. I'd give this book a 4 on a 1-5 star rating.

  30. My overall opinion on the Blackthorn Key is its ok. I don't really like mystery books because they don't interest me. I had suspected Stubb was the murder from early on in the book and he was the obvious choice I wish the book would have twisted it up more. On a scale one to five I give the book a 2 because the overall murder mystery didn't interest me but finding out what some of the codes meant was interesting so it's not a one because it wasn't Bad or good it was ok. My overall opinion on the Blackthorn Key is its ok.

  31. My overall opinion of the book "The Blackthorn Key" is that it was all right. It was not my most favorite book ever because I am not really into mysteries. I liked that it kept the mystery factor of the book until the end and didn't just stop the mystery in the middle of the book. I also liked that there was always a lot of suspense of what was going to happen. Something I didn't like about the book was how long it was. I also didn't like that there were so many details that at times it got confusing to understand what was happening. On a scale for 1-5 I would give this book a 3.5 star rating.

I ended up liking the book a lot. In the beginning of the book, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I started getting more into the book when Master Benedict was murdered. After that point there were so many plot twists that made the book really entertaining. I loved all of the suspense leading up to when we found out who the real villain was. I would probably rate the book a four out of five stars.

  33. My overall opinion on the book was that it could have been better. I don’t think that it was awful and that I would never read it again, it’s just that I’ve read better. It was very exciting and adventurous, but I didn’t find it very intriguing. In some parts, I was a bit confused and I had to go back and reread. I think the main reason for this is that it is set in a time that I don’t know much about. It was also on a topic that I had a very hard time imagining. I had to read some descriptions multiple times to really figure out what was going on. Once I got past that part, this book was okay. If I had to rate it, I would rate it a three to four star book. It wasn’t the best or the worst book I’ve read, it was right there in the middle.

In my opinion I didn't think the book was that good. I felt as though there weren't as many surprises. If It weren't for me wanting to get a good grade and I was reading it on my free time I probably would have set it down unfinished. It wasn't the worst book I have ever read but that kind of style of reading isn't intriguing to me. I really enjoyed reading The Blackthorn Key. One thing I enjoyed was the suspense and mystery that was present throughout the book. This book really was a page-turner and I didn’t want to put it down. In my opinion, the book ended nicely and I wasn’t left with many questions or loose ends like I have been with other books. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the book, seeing as I usually don’t reach for fantasy novels like The Blackthorn Key. Maybe now I will expand my horizons to more books like this one.
